Supervising and Managing a Personal Assistant
When you decide to hire a personal assistant (PA) you become an employer. You will gain the benefits of directing your services but you also have the responsibilities of being an employer. You must tell the PA clearly what tasks he needs to do, how to do them, and coach him if he needs to improve his work. It also means you need to treat the worker with respect and help him respect you and want to keep working for you.
This section provides information and suggestions that will help you to achieve these goals. You can learn about:
I didn't realize when I hired my first worker all the things that go with being an employer.
As a good employer you:
- help the worker feel good about work.
- know which tasks you can do yourself and which ones you need help with.
- communicate your needs clearly, assertively, and respectfully.
- encourage respect and trust.
- compliment the worker for doing a good job.
- are patient when the worker makes mistakes.
- give suggestions for improvement politely but firmly.
- keep administrative tasks up to date including paychecks.
- keep your home a safe place to work.
- make sure the worker is paid correctly and on time.
If you want your employees to be committed, productive, and motivated, you need to learn skills to help you be a good supervisor. If you are a good coach to your employees they will develop skills and attitudes that will continually improve your working relationship and environment.
Being an employer also means you need to learn a little about running a business. You will need to understand how to manage paperwork, create and maintain a safe work setting, and train an employee.
