Johnson, Amanda M., and Kay Branch. (April 2001). Long term care workforce recruitment and retention in rural Alaska: A report on personal care attendant focus groups. Alaska Division of Senior Services.

Abstract:
Alaska faces some unique recruitment and retention issues. From three focus groups with personal care assistants (PCAs), this report identifies reasons for paraprofessional turnover: low pay, insufficient time to complete caregiving tasks, and unstable work hours; lack of respect; and one uniquely Native American Alaskan issue, no time off for subsistence activities (such as fishing). PCAs also commented on a range of recruitment strategies presented by the focus group facilitator: recruitment bonuses, annual bonuses, and a caregiver conference.

Abstract:
In 2001 the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) awarded Real Choice Systems Change (RCSC) Grants to states and other entities working to improve state long-term care systems.
