Criteria for selection of promising practices

Current crieria for selecting a promising practice include:

  • The Workplace Personal Assistant Services (WPAS) practice has contributed to hiring, retaining, or promoting workers with disabilities.
  • The WPAS practice is a part of the organization’s written policy, and the organization agrees to make it available through the Center project.
  • The WPAS practice has been in place for at least 6 months.
  • The WPAS practice reduces or eliminates one or more barriers identified in our research.

Barriers to providing WPAS include:

  • Costs
    • Perceived costs to employer
    • Perceived costs to work unit
    • Risk/insurance, especially for personal care

  • Attitudes
    • Co-worker and supervisor attitude
    • Employee attitude

  • Company structure
    • Employee preparation/awareness
    • Waiting time for accommodations
    • Space needs for additional person

  • Other: Security clearance requirements
